coorparoo PROFILE

The suburb of Coorparoo is located in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. As of the 2021 census, it had an estimated population of 18,132.

Camp Hill, Holland Park, Stones Corner, Greenslopes, East Brisbane and Norman Park border Coorparoo, located 5.7 kilometres (3.5 miles) south-east of the Brisbane GPO.

In 1875, Coorparoo was renamed after a public meeting that took place on March 22, after it had previously been known as Four Mile Camp. According to early surveyors, Coorparoo was probably named after an Aboriginal name for Norman Creek, Koolpuroom. In either case, the word refers to a place associated with mosquitoes, or a sound created by a gentle dove.

An Aboriginal clan called the Coorparoo lived south of the Brisbane River and usually camped alongside creeks. A tributary of Norman Creek was called Kulpurum, which was their name. In South Brisbane, other clans began to move into the watercourse campsites after white settlement.

A total of 16,282 people lived in Coorparoo at the time of the 2016 census, including 51.2% females and 48.8% males. It is estimated that the median age of the population is 34; 4 years younger than the average age of the Australian population.
