It has a population of 12,915 in the 2016 census, which makes it a popular destination among tourists in Brisbane thanks to its waterfront, jetty, and tidal wading pool.
The name Wynnum is likely derived from a Durubalic word meaning mud crab or pandanus palm
More than 25,000 years of Aboriginal history have been recorded at Quandamooka (Moreton Bay)
Wynnum's population was 12,229 in 2011, 51.1% female and 48.9% male. According to the Wynnum population census, the median age was 40 years, 3 years higher than the Australian median age.
It is home to many long-established sporting clubs, including Wynnum Seagulls Rugby League Club, Wynnum Golf Club, Wynnum District SC, Wynnum Manly District Cricket Club, Wynnum Bugs Rugby Union Club, Bayside United Soccer Club, and Wynnum Vikings Australian Rules Football Club.
On the Cleveland railway line, Wynnum is served by three stations. Several railway stations provide access to regular Queensland Rail City network services to Brisbane and Cleveland, including Wynnum North, Wynnum Central, and Wynnum Central North.
